DEVELOPMENTAL ASSESSMENT
A series of 2-3 sessions which includes parent interview, child observation and direct work with the child to gauge the child's functioning level. This helps form a set of goals which gives a basis for building a suitable individualised curriculum for the child. Progress reports and a new set of goals will be given when the child reaches the next level.
EARLY INTERVENTION
Each session is an intensive one-to-one sitting whit the child using principles of TEACCH and RDI. An average session typically lasts 45 minutes and works towards the goals outlined for that child. Small group sessions will also be conducted for building social skills.
PARENT TRAINING
Parents will be trained to provide a similar environment and teaching techniques at home. We help parents understand how their child thinks thereby enabling them to deal with behaviours that may be challenging. Training will be done by direct consultation on a regular basis as well as frequent workshops.
OUR APPROACH
The methodology followed for intervention is evidence based and incorporates the best practices in the field. As each child has unique needs we use an eclectic approach based on the principles of the following intervention methods.
TEACCH
Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children developed by Dr. Eric Schopler. It focuses on ‘structured teaching’ using the child’s need for routine and repetition to enable learning. It makes the environment predictable to reduce uncertainty which is often the cause of anxiety in children with autism. It also utilises visuals extensively as their strength lies in visual information processing.
RDI
Relationship Development Intervention developed by Dr. Steven Gutstein. It focuses on building social and emotional skills. It helps children in forming personal relationships and sharing their experiences which can be very difficult for children with autism. It helps provide ‘learning opportunities’ based on the child’s ‘developmental readiness’.
